Hi, thank you very much for your question..

Well to put it briefly..

Airsoft is a sport!

People enjoy playing Airsoft just like any other sport. Keeps you in great shape as well, if you play it regularly.

Most people play Airsoft because they like guns, but not the whole get-shot-and-killed thing. Me included :-)

Others like it because they have been in the Army - or want to be in the Army - and this is the closest they can get.

Some people are gun specifically, Airsoft guns collectors.

Airsoft guns, rifles, and machine guns are the most realistic you can get without buying a real gun.
